I hiked up to a volcano, Sierra Negra.
We rode up to the starting point in a rickety old truck with wooden
seats. The path was lined with guava trees that had invaded the
national park from orchards near the town. The finches love the guava
and spread the seeds. We reached the volcano and pictures can not
show the immensity of the crater. It is the second largest in the
world. It looks like a field of sharp black rocks. Apparently the
crust is thin and it is dangerous to walk on it.
We continued past the large volcano to
a smaller one that has erupted several times in the last few years.
The landscape looked like we were on the moon. There was very little
plant life or animal life except some lava lizards. There are holes
that you can put your hands in and feel the hot air. On colder days
you can see the heat rising from the center of the volcano. The view
was stupendous. We could see both the east and west coasts of the
island at the same time. Three other volcanoes loomed in the distance
and offshore islands appeared in the misty horizon. I felt like I was
in another place and time. I thought of the book, The Land that Time
Forgot. I expected a dinosaur to appear any minute. Wow!
The pictures aren't mine because I dropped my camera in the ocean!
