We crossed the mountains
by bus from the coast. It was a spectacular ride and the four hours
went by quickly. We came down from the mountains with Cuenca below us
and I fell in love with it immediately. It had just gotten dark and
all the churches were lit up. It is a small historical city with many
beautiful old buildings including our hotel. We are staying at Casa
Naranja. It's an old mansion with a cranky old woman running things.
All the rooms surround a courtyard and have 15-foot ceilings. The
walls are so thick none of the traffic noise comes through, but it's
kind of creepy because it’s dark, damp, and quiet.

The road to Cuenca |
The next morning we walked
around the town to see the churches and to walk along the famous
river walk. We also took a bus to nearby villages Gualacero and
Chordleg. Gualacero has a nice market where we had lunch surrounded
by ten stalls selling pork pulled off full size pigs. (see photo) We
drank Rosero, an alcoholic cornmeal drink for dessert. Chordeleg was
a jewelry making village where silver filigree jewelry is sold. Even
the lampposts look like earrings!!
